Langley, British Columbia The game between the University of Victoria Vikes and Athletes in Action should have been over early as the Vikes jumped out to a 25-8 lead, but AIA made it interesting by making it a two-point game at the half, 44-42, for the Vikes. The Vikes' balanced attack allowed Victoria to retake control in the second half, however, as the Island squad topped AIA 94-73.
AIA rallied in the first half with a 13-3 run to make it 28-21 at the ten-minute mark. They continued to match Victoria over the remainder of the half and were able to go into the break tailing by a slim two points, 44-42.
Athletes in Action matched Victoria early in the half, and only trailed UVIC by one, 59-58, with 10:30 left in the game. But for the next six minutes the Vikes dominated the play and after two Chris Trumpy foul shots with 4:20 remaining the Vikes had gone on a 22-8 run to build an 81-66 lead.
The Vikes continued to build their lead over the final minutes. Up 90-71with just over a minute remaining, Victoria emptied their bench and closed out the game with a solid effort.
Brandon Ellis had 16 points to lead the balanced Victoria attack, which had six players hit double digits in scoring. Chris Trumpy and Jonathan Hughes each added 14 points for the Vikes, while Dante Quanine led Athletes in Action with 17 points.
The two squads will finish off the tournament tomorrow. Athletes in Action will match up against the host TWU Spartans at 8:00 pm, while Victoria will play Peninsula College at 4:00 pm. The loss drops AIA to 0-2 on the tournament, while the win improves Victoria to 1-1.
